Belgium takes over EU Council Presidency on 1 July 2010

The Presidency of the European Union Council is held by a different Member State every six months. It will be Belgium's turn at the helm of the EU in the second half of 2010.

Toward this end, our country will be cooperating closely with Spain and Hungary. Spain is set to be the President during the first half of 2010, while the honour will go to Hungary during the first six months of 2011.

Consequently, Belgium will be joining forces with these two countries to work out a joint programme to cover an 18-month period.

What can Europe do for you?

The European Union is entitled to take action in several areas. Its powers are defined by treaties. Against the background of these powers, Europe constantly strives to conduct the most efficient policy and to be as close to the citizen as possible.

Every six months a different Member State takes over the EU Council Presidency. Starting from July 2010 it will be Belgium's turn. During this Presidency Belgium will therefore be called upon to play a key role in organizing and stimulating European activities.

As a federal state, Belgium is divided into communities and regions. It is represented in the Council by a federal, regional or community minister, depending on the official's policy areas.
